Let’s workout together!
In the context of the Erasmus+ KA2 project “BRIDGES”, United Societies of Balkans (USB) organises weekly online workout classes for migrants in Thessaloniki. This initiative came up in response to the need of migrants to integrate in the local community, in combination with a healthy activity. Thus, the classes are broadcasted live on social media, inviting the public to join and to start building rapport with the migrants. The class consists of 40 minutes of physical activity for beginners, based on correct form and functional movements, such as squats, planche, burpees and more. All classes have the same structure (warm up, technique, high-intensity workout, stretching), but each class has different content, teaching the participants new skills and adding diversity to their routine.
The project BRIDGES with a partnership of 9 organisations from 5 Countries (Italy, Spain, Austria, Croatia and Greece) has the aim to experiment collaborative cohesion practices at local level, so to strengthen the community as a whole, through the encouragement of dialogue and mutual enrichment between third-country and host-country nationals. Through sports practices, cultural activities and voluntary activities for the implementation of community services, co-designed and implemented by all community members in a participatory and inclusive process, the project allows to promote the European Union values of inclusion of migrants and solidarity among citizens, providing innovative solutions to address common needs. Integration initiatives will be co-designed and developed at local level so to create 8 cohesive “local networking communities”.
Greek and English classes for migrants
In addition to the workout classes, USB is also conducting Greek and English online classes for migrants, in order to provide them with skills that will facilitate their integration in the community of Thessaloniki. All these needs came up as a result of a meeting between them and USB in the context of “BRIDGES”, where the necessity for linguistic support was expressed, identified and addressed.
Joint staff training on the use of video against hate speech and xenophobia
Under the KA2+ project “DigitMid”, an online training took place on the 20th and 23th of April, for the acquaintance of 20 youth workers in the use of video in empathic imagination & emotional intelligence against hate speech and xenophobia. During the training, the participants explored methods such as autobiographical storytelling and cognitive empathy, as means to create digital products that provide alternative and counter narratives to discrimination. The goal was to provide the youth workers with a solid base for creating their own workshops, through which they will involve young people in the process of using digital media to promote intercultural dialogue and to fight against prejudice.
The project DigitMid has the aim to broaden knowledge and methodologies on how Digital Media can increasingly become a positive tool for young Europeans to develop civic and social skills, and to promote intercultural dialogue. It involves 5 organisations (from Italy, Spain, Portugal, Poland, UK and Greece) that are trying to achieve the improvement of educational methodologies that use Digital Media to foster attitudes and skills related to intercultural dialogue among young Europeans.
