YEU Podcast: Human Rights and Youth Participation

In episode 7 of season 6 of the YEU Podcast, Margaux, YEU Project Assistant and the voice of Season 5, came back to speak with Andrea Orlandi, an Italian and Sicilian human rights activist working on LGBTQ+ rights and intersectionality, about human rights, youth participation and community activism.

Andrea highlighted that human rights go beyond legal frameworks and international institutions. They are also part of our everyday lives and require active citizens who are willing to participate, speak up and contribute to positive change.

The conversation also explored the role of NGOs and youth organisations in connecting human rights theory with practice by providing young people with opportunities to learn, participate and become active citizens.

Andrea shared his experience founding Trinaqueeria, an organisation promoting queer rights and representation in Sicily, which creates opportunities for young people to engage in international projects and bring their experiences back to their communities.

Reflecting on his own journey in activism, Andrea encouraged young people to take initiative, remain curious and work collaboratively, rather than waiting for opportunities to come their way.
