For the 2nd year in a row, United Societies of Balkans has launched the opportunity for citizens in Thessaloniki to become members of a volunteering group that will take action upon current societal, environmental and humanitarian issues. On 05/10/2022 the first meeting of the team took place, giving the space for new and old members to get to know each other and to get familiar with the scope of the team. USB’s local volunteers’ group is open to anyone and has its meetings on every Wednesday at 17.00; where the team’s actions are forged and educational workshops take place for the team to get enriched with competences to support their actions.

U.S.B SAILED TO THE MOON ON THE “10TH SAIL FOR PINK”.
October is the month of sensitisation to breast cancer and the Greek Association “Alma Zois” (tr. Leap to Life) being committed to this aim, organizes every year events at the biggest cities of Greece in order to spread the message of prevention. To this end, 15 volunteers of USB participated in the 10th Sail for Pink at Thessaloniki’s Waterfront on Sunday, October 9th. Our goal was to express our solidarity to the breast-cancer patients and their families.
This year’s event totally touched our hearts not only because we finally managed to reunite our voices and have fun together after 2 years of cancellation due to covid-19, but also because the slogan was “YOU are the hope”. As part of this celebration, we wore our “10th Sail for Pink” T-shirts to contribute to “Almas Zois” support campaign and enjoyed various activities held by the organization: we were given pink balloons, free drinks and snacks, we danced to zumba rhythms, we had pink bows painted on our faces or other parts of our bodies, we got our hair braided, we wrote our message on the pink bow wall, we listened to stories narrated by people who won the battle or are still fighting against breast cancer and finally we admired a choir of little children singing songs for their affected relatives. Undoubtedly, the highlight of the day was the marathon where we all walked together, holding each other’s hands on the sidewalk of Waterfront and enjoying the view of the boats sailing with pink sails at Thermaikos’ Bay under the sun.
To cut a long story short, should we share an important piece of information that we learned during the 10th Sail for Pink, that will be that breast testing is crucial both for women and men as 97% of breast cancer cases are curable thanks to early diagnosis.
