On the 7th of October, our association Tierra Techo Trabajo had the opportunity to organise a tribute event in honour of Fela Kuti, the king of Afrobeat. The event was organised at the headquarters of the editorial office of our experiment in citizen journalism, the civic monitoring platform SBEM! which is based in the Vallicaldi district of the historic centre of Agrigento.
This neighbourhood has a large and well-established community of people from Senegal, who have warmly and willingly welcomed our association and the events we promote here. On this occasion, we decided to discuss the book ‘Fela: This Bitch of a Life: The Authorised Biography of Africa’s Musical Genius’, recounting the most significant features of the musician’s life, from the birth of afrobeat to his political commitment and activism against dictatorship. Finally, we danced to the notes of his most famous ballads.
The event was in fact organised in partnership with Festivalle and Ellenic Music Festival, the most important and original music festivals held every summer in Agrigento.
