We are surrounded by constant change! The need for addressing issues related to the environment, climate change, social injustices, animal welfare, etc. grows as time goes by. It is such scenarios that are addressed through volunteering programs like European Solidarity Corps, structured around the idea that youngsters could bring a change in the society by getting involved in projects, networking and being encouraged to use their voices on social issues that interest them.
This is why organizations across Europe come together in addressing nowadays challenges in a pursuit to revert damages against the environment, address social injustices and educate populations. For 2020-2021, YEU Cyprus decided to concentrate its effort on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, set by the United Nations in 2015. The goals address challenges that humanity faces and aspire to raise awareness around the globe on actions that could be taken at both individual and community level.
Starting from the above premise, the YAS! project has been born with the aim of promoting the 17 SDG’s across Cyprus, spark interest and generate discussions around the topic. As for the team involved, YAS! has been led by 7 volunteers, coming from different backgrounds and countries.
YAS! had a one year long Radio Show in collaboration with Lemoni Radio, where interesting topics have been combined with a fine selection of music. Secondly, a set of infographics have been realized portraying the situation in Cyprus measured against each and every SDG. Towards the end of the project, the infographics have been turned into a booklet that has been offered to participants during a conference dedicated to exploring how the SDG’s are being addressed in the region by other NGO’s and institutions. Other initiatives of the YAS! project have been: Humans of Cyprus| SDG Edition – an initiative dedicated to outstanding people, working on making a difference around them; SDG Café – a forum created for the public to get informed and discuss on various topics; CSR Fair – an online workshop designed to create a network between companies and NGO’s, that could further collaborate on common projects and exchange resources and the SDG’s Scavenger Hunt organized across the Old Town of Nicosia in order to spread awareness.
