Through the BICYCLE Project’s Bike Routes, YEU gathered young people in Brussels for cycling activities designed to explore sustainable mobility, civic participation, and youth-led community engagement.
During the first activity, participants joined Critical Mass Brussels, a collective cycling movement promoting safer, greener and more inclusive streets. Riding through Brussels as part of a larger group allowed participants to experience cycling as a means of transport, but also as a meaningful way to engage with the local community .
The activity was particularly meaningful as it took place during a heatwave, underlining the urgency of rethinking how cities are designed and how people move within them. Cycling can contribute to reducing emissions, creating healthier urban spaces and encouraging more sustainable responses to the challenges posed by climate change.
The second activity consisted of a two-day programme, combining another ride with Critical Mass Brussels on the first day with a follow-up cycling activity and reflection session on the second day. Participants gathered in front of the European Commission to reflect on their experience and explore how collective cycling initiatives can contribute to shaping local and European policies on cycling, while also creating opportunities for youth participation and promoting European values. The discussion encouraged participants to consider the role young people can play in contributing to more sustainable, inclusive and connected cities and communities.
Together, these activities demonstrated the core approach of Bike Routes: combining experiential learning, cultural exchange, teamwork and youth participation to promote sustainable living and strengthen connections among young people from different backgrounds.
YEU would like to thank everyone who participated and contributed to the activities, as well as Critical Mass Brussels for creating a space where cyclists can come together, be visible and have their voices heard.
Stay tuned for the next Bike Routes activities!
